What Is Saju?

Saju, often translated as the Four Pillars, is a traditional East Asian system that reads a person's birth year, month, day, and hour as four structural pillars. Each pillar combines a heavenly stem and an earthly branch, creating an eight-character chart that reveals how the five elements are distributed and balanced.

Where the System Comes From

Saju's roots reach back to Chinese destiny studies of the Tang dynasty, and the system took something close to its present shape in the Song dynasty, when the scholar Xu Ziping reorganized interpretation around the Day Master. Modern Saju is for this reason also called Ziping astrology. The practice settled into the Korean peninsula through the Goryeo and Joseon eras, weaving itself into rites of passage and date-selection customs, and it survives today in everyday rituals like New Year readings and marriage compatibility checks. A thousand years of refined interpretive tradition is Saju's weight; not being an empirically validated science is its limit. Knowing both is the balanced place to start.

What a Chart Is Made Of

The eight characters use two kinds of symbols: ten Heavenly Stems carrying the energies of the sky and twelve Earthly Branches carrying the cycles of the ground. Every character belongs to one of the Five Elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — and has a yin or yang quality. Reading a chart ultimately means reading "in what proportions, and in what relationships, do the five energies live inside this person?" On top of the natal eight characters run the ten-year Daeun and yearly Seun cycles, which add the dimension of timing.
